I’m a terrible planner. I’m more of a fly by the seat of my pants type of person.
This doesn’t always bode well for me. And causes a lot of undue stress on myself and yes, those close to me, I’m sure. Procrastination at its best.
But here’s the thing. I’m just not good at planning. I wasn’t raised by planners either. I grew up in a house where my parents were packing at midnight and doing loads of laundry for a trip leaving at 7am the next morning.
Spontaneity was typical. We’d wake up on a Saturday and dad would say, “Hey, who wants to go to Disneyland? (or the beach, or to San Diego, or the mountains)” And it wasn’t a ploy to surprise us. It was indeed spontaneous. More than once, we’d head to Dodger stadium for a game without tickets only to find out it was sold out and dad would get tickets from a scalper. (This was in the dark ages before craig’s list).
So, I don’t know what kind of hope there is for me becoming a planner. I do a lot of planning in my head though. Lists in my brain of what I want/need to do. And even though I’m doing so much last minute. With the help of friends and loved ones, quite often. It all works out in the end.
I keep things flexible. So, if one thing doesn’t work out according to the ideas I have in my head, I’ll do something else. I roll with the punches. And this works in my favor too. I don’t get caught up in the details. So if it doesn’t work out the way I thought, I don’t lose my head. No, that’s not me. I have dear friends like that though, and god bless them.
So, the point of all this… I have a LOT to do tomorrow!!! ACK!
What are your planning tricks and tips? What works for you? I’d like to pass on better planning skills to my kids. What do you think?
**I’m doing the Holidailies blogging every day in December. Wish me luck!
