This weekend, the MARIACHI USA Festival is happening at the Hollywood Bowl and I get to go! Marco and I will be getting a date night and I finally get to attend an event I’ve been wanting to go to for years.
Does that ever happen to you? I swear, for years it’s been one of those things I’ve wanted to do but didn’t know about it in time. Usually, it’s my parents telling me they went and I’m saying what about meeee??? This time, they are doing the babysitting and I’m going to the Hollywood Bowl!
Growing up in a Mexican-American home, it was important to my parents to hold on to the Mexican culture of my heritage. As a kid, I danced in a Folklorico performing group and Mexican music became a part of me. Especially Mariachi music. There are songs I hear and to this day, my feet just move.
Fun little fact – Marco also used to dance Folkorico as a kid. How cute would it have been if we had gotten to dance together? I really need to find old pictures next time I’m at my mom’s house.
The multi-talented artist-producer, Rodri J. Rodriguez created the MARIACHI USA Festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl in 1990. In 1991, Ms. Rodriguez founded the MARIACHI USA Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides a vehicle with which to nurture the proliferation of culture through music and performing arts education in school-based programs. The Foundation has provided grants for music instruction K-12 students in California and the West, and hosts Camp MARIACHI USA, which offers free intensive music instruction to over 100 students.
As a mom to four girls, I love to see the success of a woman like Rodri J Rodriguez. I’m especially excited to see Trio Ellas, a group of three female artists making a name in the Mariachi world. I’ll have more to share after the festival. I can’t wait!
Here’s a sneak peek!
